Tips

Adjust the pressure

When using fibre discs, it’s important not to have the pressure too high.

High pressure can be the cause of heat production, burn marks and premature wear.

Avoid heat production

Keep the fibre discs moving smoothly back and forth to avoid the risk of burn spots.

Maximum and recommended speed

The maximum speed for all Cibo fibre discs is 80 m/s.

The ideal peripheral speed depends on the material you are working with. We recommend always working at speeds below 60 m/s.

When using silicon carbide discs, it's best to adjust the speed based on the material you are working with.

The table below suggests recommended speeds for working on various materials. These speeds should be considered as guidelines – the right speed will depend on the exact task.

Choose the right back-up pad

Fibre discs must always be used together with a back-up pad.
Using the right back-up pad is important to getting the right finish on your workpiece.

Flexible back-up pad

FIZ

For grinding with a soft contact.

Gives you controlled stock removal and a finer finish.

Very well suited for use with fibre discs with a fine grain.

Hard back-up pad

FIW

For grinding with fibre discs with a hard contact for fast, aggressive stock removal.
Hard back-up pad

FIH

This high-performance back-up pad for fibre discs has a unique architecture that guarantees a hard, stable contact at all times.

The composition of the disc makes it extremely heat resistant. The heat-damping ribs result in a cooler grinding process, which helps prevent heat-related deformation of the back-up pad.

Safety first

PPE (personal protective equipment) is your best friend when you’re working with abrasives . Always choose the right protective equipment and stay safe and healthy throughout your career.

Always use appropriate PPE from the list below:

Storing fibre discs

The fibre backing used for fibre discs is highly sensitive to humidity and temperature.

If the humidity is either too high or very low, the discs can deform. If that happens, they cannot be mounted properly on a back-up pad and may end up damaging the workpiece when you try to use them. If exposed to a high level of humidity over a longer period of time, the abrasive grain will loosen and detach more easily, drastically reducing the performance of the disc.

Poor conditions can also sometimes cause the disc to become brittle and disintegrate while in use – with a risk of bodily injury due to flying debris.

Always store the discs flat (place something heavy on top) at a temperature between 15 and 30 °C and a relative humidity between 45 and 65% .

Do not leave them in direct sunlight and never expose them to liquids or chemicals.

Up to grit 60, use a high-performance back-up pad to make the most of the capacity of the fibre discs.

Tips & tricks

For fast, aggressive stock removal, your best choice is a fibre disc with abrasive grain between 16 and 50 grit.
A hard back-up pad is used for working on smooth workpieces. This also guarantees fast stock removal.

To sand curved and rounded shapes and to get a better finish, go for a flexible back-up pad.
